The mission of the Duluth NAACP Education Committee is to actively advocate for equitable local, state, and federal policies that establish education standards, allocate resources, and set priorities for education and workforce systems. To achieve this mission, the committee has three overarching areas within which they focus their efforts:
We need strategies and investments that build accountability to advance the success of children of color. Black children deserve to experience culturally relevant, student-centered learning — not extreme punishments or hallways staffed with police officers. We work to expand policies and interventions that equip all those who work with students in education, as well as families and communities to better support their kids' needs in school.
We support students getting the education and skills development they need, so they can be successful on the job or in an academic environment. College costs should be affordable. We advocate for forgiving student loan debt and decreasing the overall cost of college as an economic imperative.

What started as a leader reading a book in a classroom has now turned into a day of learning about MLK from leaders of the community/branch at the elementary, middle and high school levels in Port Huron schools.
The education committee gives away at least one scholarship every year to a deserving student who is graduating. Last year our focus was on trades.
Every year at the Southside Music Festival hosted by the Port Huron branch NAACP, the education committee gives away 100's of books for free. We also give away books at other events as available.
From mobile black history mobiles to reading specially selected books for MLK, our education committee works to ensure we are apart of the educational community.
We're always looking for new partners to collaborate with on projects and events. If your organization shares our values and mission, let's work together to make a positive impact.
Help us raise awareness of our mission and programs by sharing our website, social media pages, and events with your friends, family, and colleagues.
